Preceptor Information

Pharmacy experiential education offers students hands-on practical experience in numerous pharmacy disciplines.  The experiential program is overseen by the Office of Experiential Education (OEE) and provides a continuum of required and elective pharmacy practice experiences that have been carefully coordinated with didactic coursework and co-curricular activities to be of appropriate scope, intensity, and duration to support specific pharmacy educational outcomes.

During the P1-P3 years, introductory pharmacy practice experiences are designed to progressively prepare students for advanced pharmacy practice experiences.  The culmination of these experiences is to produce practice-ready graduates who have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of practitioners in order to advance healthcare and positively impact their patients' lives as part of an inter-professional team.

Mark Black at  Indian Health Service (IHS)
Spring: 2025

I was introduced to the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the United Stated Public Health Service (USPHS)
during my time as a student at the Idaho State University (ISU) School of Pharmacy (2002-2006). I was
so excited about the mission of the IHS and the USPHS to improve the physical, mental, social, and
spiritual health of Alaska Natives and American Indians that I applied for an early commission as an
officer in the USPHS in 2005.

I was able to start my career with an isolated underserved population in
Eagle Butte, South Dakota, on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. I had so many opportunities to
advance my skills as an outpatient, inpatient and ER pharmacist in Eagle Butte. Living on the reservation
and being part of a Native American community helped me to gain a great respect and admiration for
the Native American people and their cultures. I have had the opportunity to serve on three
reservations during my career the Cheyenne River (Lakota Sioux tribe), Wind River (Eastern Shoshone
and Northern Arapaho tribes) and Fort Hall (Shoshone-Bannock Tribes) reservations.

As I have progressed through my career in the IHS, I have had many opportunities to use my
professional skills as a clinical pharmacist. I have worked with pain management, diabetes, asthma,
anticoagulation, opioid use disorder, hypertension, hypothyroid, immunization and other teams to
improve the health of our patients. As my interest and skills in clinical pharmacy continued to grow, I
became a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist. Board certification has opened many
opportunities for me to advance my role as a health care provider.

One of my favorite and most rewarding opportunities I have had with the IHS has been to precept
students from all over the country. I have been precepting students since 2007 and have hosted
students from schools in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Idaho. I
have been precepting students from ISU since 2014. I enjoy imparting my knowledge and experience
with eager student pharmacists, and I always look forward to learning something from them.
My current duty station, Fort Hall Indian Health Clinic, has unique opportunities for ISU students to
apply their didactic lessons to direct patient care. As a pharmacy, we offer pharmacy-based
immunization, anticoagulation, hypothyroid and emergency contraception clinics, where students get
the opportunity to help directly manage patients care in these areas. They also have the opportunity to
participate in the care of other chronic disease states, working with pharmacist and medical providers.
Students review patients’ charts and write SOAP notes prior to a patient medical visit.

We work together to create a care plan for patients’ chronic diseases. The student reviews the plans with the patient’s
medical provider and make suggestions related to the patient’s medications. Students then see the
patient with the provider and discuss recommendations with the patient. This is beneficial for the
student, the provider, and most importantly, the patient. Recently, a patient commented to their
provider after visiting with the pharmacy student, “We should have pharmacist in every visit.”

I tell my students that there are many ways to be an influential pharmacist. I encourage them to
evaluate interactions with pharmacists and decide for themselves what traits they would like to embody
in their own careers to become trusted, caring, and knowledgeable health care providers.
I am grateful to a profession that has brought so much fulfillment and satisfaction to my career. I am
very honored to give a little back to the profession by being a preceptor for ISU pharmacy students.
